In this Gallery there is the skeleton of a big elephant born in 1630 on the Ceylon Isle, Eastern Indies, brought to Florence and here exhibited raising great curiosity. It died here in 1655 because the weather and the air of this country, much different from those of its place of origin, were inadequate to it. It was 11 B. long and 8 B. tall. It weighed 6600 lbs., and was measured in Vienna in front of the Emperor Frederick the Third. People say this animal grows until it is 100 years old and can live 300 years”. Vertaling van het fragment, gepubliceerd in: E. Cappellini et al., ‘Resolution of the type material of the Asian elephant, Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758 (Proboscidea, Elephantidae)’, in: Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society (online publicatie 4 november 2013), Supplementary information (online beschikbaar gesteld door de uitgever met vertaling van Enrico Cappellini en Anne-Marie Roos).

3) [In de marge: The skeleton of an elephant.] “In one room is the skin of a young elephant, which was alive about six years since; it cost the duke 100 pistoles: the body of it was bulky, the legs thick and short, no joints scarce appearing; five ungulae on each foot, and the least toe is innermost; the toes of the fore-feet are sharper than those behind; the eyes are small pro ratione corporis; large and broad flapping ears, the proboscis begins from the nose, and lessens by degrees, reaching to the ground, with which they say it could draw a sword. The skeleton we took notice of; the head of huge bigness; the lower maxilla ends in a sharp angle, the upper hath two rows of waved grinding teeth, (each about two inches broad, answering to those in the lower jaw) which make an acute angle in the middle of the palate; thus: a b. is the [hier staat een afbeelding met verwijsletters] palate, the upper grinders compos’d so close of waved teeth, that they seem two solid bones c c; the passage into the mouth will hardly admit more than a man’s fist; at the upper end of the palate is a great passage to the nostrils; the nasus is broad, and hangs over the end of the lower maxilla: at each corner of the nose grew a tooth about four inches long; but in males they will be great and long. Here the proboscis begins; the forehead bone has a sharp processus over the cavity of the nares; the occiput is divided into two high eminentiae; a very deep and large sinus for the musculus temporalis to run in; the head stands almost perpendicular, with the nose downward; six vertebrae colli, the second and third joined together; one vertebra claviculae; 22 vertebrae dorsi, the 18th and 19th join’d together in the processus . . . three vertebrae ossis sacri; 15 vertebrae caudae, 19 ribs on a side: the fore-legs answer to the arms of a man; the knees seem to bend forward; large processus sticks out (which hath a sinus to receive and support the brachium) hinders it from bending far backwards, so that ’tis impossible an elephant should kneel: [in marge: N.B. The fore-legs were not set right] the metacarpus bones are five, which answer to digits, but are only five ungulae; the bones of the carpus are eight; the radius thwarts the cubitus on the foreside, and is articulated with the exterior process of the brachium, and interior process of the carpus; the scapulae are much like those in other animals: the first pair of ribs are join’d per harmoniam, they are broad before, and serve instead of claviculae; no fibula in the legs, only femur and tibia; a large patella, having a sinus excavated for it in the joint of the knee, which bends forward, and is made for kneeling: to the talus is articulated the calcaneum, like a man’s heel, and before to a long bone, to which are joined these three, viz. 1. The innermost digitus. 2. The 2d digitus. 3. The 3d digitus. To the 4th bone of the tarsus the 4th and 5th toe is join’d: the cavity of the cerebellum seem’d like that of a man’s.”

5) “I find among my papers a short description I took of the skeleton of the Elephant, in the Duke of Florence’s Museum, and therein the description of the bones of the feet. The toes of the fore feet, or rather the bones of the metacarpium are five; for it hath properly not toes at all, but only five ungulae upon these five bones, which appear without side the skin. The like is said of the bones of the metatarsus, in the hind feet. It follows the ungulae of these hinder feet are small, round and blunt. So it seems this animal hath that peculiarity to have no toes in his feet. And it is doubtful whether his nails be ungulae or ungues, they being round and blunt, and covering the very tops of his toes”. A.M. Roos?) die in 2013 van de Latijnse passage over de olifant verscheen in de bijlage van het artikel ‘Resolution of the type material of the Asian elephant, Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758 (Proboscidea, Elephantidae)’, in: Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, zonder de verklarende noten:  “[p. 131] Unguiculate viviparous quadrupeds are creatures either with toes which are not divided or separate, but which are joined together and covered by skin which they share; only their extremities project at the edge of their feet, and these are equipped with blunt nails – the elephant alone belongs to this category; or with toes which are separated from each other only up to a certain extent, and I have supplied a description of how they are divided in an earlier passage. In respect of its nails the elephant appears to be an anomaly, and to be set midway, in a manner of speaking, between ungulate and unguiculate animals, for, unless pictures deceive us, their nails cover the ends of their toes, and in this regard they resemble claws, but the animal does not walk on them, and in this respect they differ from claws.

THE ELEPHANT. It is clearly distinguished from other living creatures by size alone, in which it surpasses them. At times it comes close to fifteen feet, or five English ells, in height. There are however in addition other distinct specific characteristic marks, which show that this creature differs from all others not only in appearance but also in type. It does of course have a very long trunk, which it uses like a hand to gather food both dry and moist, and to move this to its mouth. It has a pair of teeth, which emerge from the upper jaw, [p. 132] which some argue are horns on account of their size, length and (in my opinion) remarkable weight. Vartomannus saw two in Sumatra which weighed 336 lbs, and Terzagus recalls one in the Museum Septalianum which was two ells long and weighed 160 pounds. It has no clavicles, but the first pair of ribs, which perform this role, is broad at the front, and joined at the extremities by the simple apposition of their contiguous surfaces [‘per harmoniam’, now called a ‘sutura harmonia’ or a joint where there is simple apposition of contiguous rough surfaces].There are 20 pairs of false and true ribs altogether, but I could not discern how many were false and how many were true, because the breast-bone and cartilages were missing from the skeleton which I saw in Florence. The bones, flank, pubic region and hip-bones do not differ from their human counterparts in any particularly noteworthy manner. The cranium is large in comparison with the rest of the body: its rear part is divided into two very large hollows or lobes, in such a way that it appears to resemble human buttocks. It does not have a cavity or hollow extending to contain the brain, which is obvious from the outside, as is the case with many other quadrupeds, but rather imitates the shape of the human cranium. The mouth is small in comparison with the size of the beast, and it is equipped with four molar teeth, or rather lumps forming molar teeth, in each jaw. For most of the teeth are implanted in solid and hard bone in such a way that they form one continuous body with it and between themselves. These teeth form 8 or 9 parallel wavy lines on the surface of their mass, and they are whiter than the remaining bone. The entire bulk of the individual teeth is inserted in the jaws simply by means of a fibrous joint [gomphosis], but the foremost one in the upper jaw is fixed at one end into the jaw, then extends forwards parallel to the palate and finally ends in a sharp point, which is housed in a hollow formed for this purpose at the edge of the jaw. It is entirely without incisors. The exterior bone of the foreleg [p. 133] is situated so that it faces the front in relation to the elbow, in a transverse direction, and is articulated with the exterior projection of the arm, and with the inner projection of the carpus. This is a particular feature in this animal, and unusual, and appears to have been made so as to increase the creature’s strength. The hide is not entirely bare, (as some have related), but is covered with hairs here and there, which are thick and quite long. The skin, according to the description given (I think) by M. Moulins in his Anatomical Treatise on the Elephant [Tractatus Anatomicus de Elephanto], was covered everywhere with certain crusty swellings, resembling long-established deeply fissured warts, or the fibres of beef which has been boiled for a long time and carved cross-wise, and they were a tawny or lemon-yellow colour. These warts (if one may call them so), both when split and when cut cross-wise resembled particles, or short segments, of that horny substance which we commonly call “whale-bone”. They stuck so firmly to the skin that neither the warts in their entirety nor particles of them (even though they had been much divided) could be pulled away from the skin without tearing it, and yet the skin was thicker and tougher than that of any other animal I have yet seen. The height of these warts was in some places equal to one third or one quarter of an inch, but elsewhere did not exceed one sixteenth or one thirty-second. The reason for this difference appears to be that the latter are worn away and consumed by more frequent rubbing, whereas this does not apply to the former.”

“The oldest specimens in the collection were inherited from the Medici and Habsburg Lorraine families. Examination of ancient letters and catalogues in the museum and some documents in the Florentine State Archive provided information about specimens still present in the collections. One example is the large Indian elephant (Elephas maximus) which according to Targioni Tozzetti, was displayed alive in the Loggia dei Lanzi in the mid-seventeenth century where “morning and evening a large number of people gathered to view this Elephant”. When it died in 1655 “by order of the Grand Duke the skeleton was prepared […] and the Skin was stretched over a wooden framework, in order to represent the greatness and natural figure of the animal”. It was then housed in the Imperial Gallery of Florence [Uffizo] and it was subsequently mentioned in an old catalogue of the museum, where it has been kept since 1774. Unfortunately only the skeleton has survived and is now displayed at the center of the large ‘Hall of Skeletons’.” Uit: G. Barsanti en G.
